Meant to Be

When it comes to sweetness, these two take the cake! Pun very much intended! I met Kristy and Patrick at a bridal show last fall and every interaction since has been filled with delight and graciousness, always so polite and outwardly thankful. With all of the fun and excitement that comes along with a wedding day, an equal dose of stress can also rear its ugly head and in those moments, these two were always more concerned that everyone else was comfortable and happy than they were with themselves. A rare and refreshing trait to see.

The couple unknowingly went to high school with one another, she being a senior when he was a young freshman, and years down the road their love for the dance floor brought them together where their high school days had not. Kristy had the wonderful idea to create a “sneak unpeek’” where she and Patrick held hands around a corner without seeing one another just before the wedding… too cute. The images I was so fortunate to capture from their amazingly lovely day at Mount Vernon Country Club on Lookout Mountain speak more loudly than I ever could, but I’ll say it anyways. These two so obviously adore one another.

I’m sure the care and thoughtfulness I received from them is just a fraction of what they show to one another… If only I could bottle something as special as that. Priceless.

Mr. Man Kadin

The much anticipated nephew pictures are here! Man have I been harassed these past few days about getting these up for viewing; everything short of death threats… whew! What a day Monday was! At nearly two weeks past her due date, my sister was scheduled to be induced… and I was scheduled to shoot a wedding. The ultimate heartbreak. I had no need to be in the room when the little one was to arrive (mom and dad had decided to not find out the sex), but I absolutely needed to be “there,” even if it was down the hall. I needed to be in the building. The whole day was a process and when I left my sister at 11AM I was certain that a little niece or nephew would be awaiting me when I returned 11 hours later. I asked the expecting parents to hold off from texting me any pictures or updates… I had waited this long to find out all of the amazing details, what’s a few more hours? As I got onto the elevator to head back to my car I broke out into tears. I adore what I do and equally adore the schedule flexibility it affords me and this was one doosey of an scheduling conflict.

The wedding in Estes was gorgeous and such a fun day to be a part of, making the seven hour shoot fly by. Just before 9:30 I cracked the door to my sister’s room, expecting to find a happy new family, but instead saw a short glimpse of a whole birthing team hard a work. Five minutes later the door opened and a proud and smiling new dad welcomed me in. And there was my perfect little nephew, Kadin, curled up on my sister’s chest, the whole family happy and healthy.

He had waited.

Horsetooth Ceremony

Graceful Shapes

MORE, by popular demand! Last week I a posted an image of my beautifully pregnant sister in a yoga pose and I’ve been hounded ever since to post more… so here they are! The docs said Bikram and the baby would get along just fine, so my sis has been yogaing through her pregnancy and wanted the pictures to prove it. Her studio allowed us to take over the hot-boxed room between classes… nothing like photographing in a sauna that smells like a sour hockey locker room. I only half complain… you get used to the stink after a few minutes, but the hot is HOT. But suffering the “elements” were well worth the results!

Soon-to-be dad joined us for the second half of the shoot for some couple shots in the studio… photo studio, not yoga… as well as some fun outdoor industrial areas a few blocks down the road. We’re now about a week past the babe’s due date and I’m beyond ready to be an aunt already. Niece or nephew’s arrival pictures soon to come, but in the meantime enjoy the expecting family!

First Moments

Two very dear friends of mine welcomed a perfect little girl, their first, into our world just a few days ago and I was fortunate enough to have them ask me to be at the hospital for those very first moments that only happen once. Watching Mark, a man I have known since the irresponsible age of twenty when future families weren’t even a flicker of our immagination, soak up his daughter behind the nursery glass, falling instantly in love with her; was such a poignant moment that caused me to tear up then and again now as I’m writing about it. Those first few moments of daddy and daughter need no words, the images speak far more loudly than any narrative ever could and the images of the rest of the day do the same. So I will leave it at that. Congratulations to these amazing new parents and you all will be seeing more of gorgeous little Mia in the next few weeks.

Fantastic Little Foos

I bought “The Green Couch” in my days of serious poor-dom and now that I think of it, I think my mom was the one who bought the antique, lime-green gem for me because she could see I had fallen deeply in love with it. I stumbled across this love at an ARC thrift store and though it crossed my path second-hand, the price tag was still a bit steep. I circled the couch. Walked away. Circled the couch again. Noticed others circling MY couch and felt possessiveness creeping in. Left the store. Drove home. And I could-not-stop-thinking-about-the-couch. At first I convinced myself that if I came back a week later, when the price would be half, and the couch was still there… it was meant to me mine. But by the time I made the five minute drive home I knew I was lying to myself. If returned at any point and the couch was no longer there, my heart would be broken. I went back and bought the couch (or my mom did.)

And what an excellent decision that was! “The Green Couch” is my bridal show booth staple, has been the cushy landing place to a newborn and most recently made it’s first outdoor appearance for the Foos Family portraits in Golden. March has been beautiful this year, so needless to say, our 9AM shoot was just a few degrees shy of perfect. And as for my models, they came full of charm… especially the little blond haired, blue eyed one! His mom apologized for his few minor moments of fussiness, which for a little guy who just turned one, were really nothing. He had far more smiles than anything else and beware, because it’s contagious!

Darling Donalds

It’s been awhile, but the Donald family is back for a much overdue family photo shoot. It had been at least a year since our last shoot, so we had some fun to make up for… I think we succeeded. I learned that when shooting an almost three year old, the best plan is to have no plan at all… they’re calling the shots. Lovely little Lexi had some ups and downs that morning, but we were able to catch quite a few really great ups… literally… One, two, THREE!! Enjoy!

Guitar Duet

Guitars make everything cooler… think of Slash with just his curly long hair and top hat… Ok, Slash would still be cool, but you add that guitar and he rockets to a whole other level! When I asked Sarah and Tyler what they really liked to do together, they both answered, “Anything involving music.” We had already decided that we wanted to shoot their engagement session on and around the 16th Street Mall in Denver and the first thing that sprang to mind was the cool hand painted pianos that the city has put out. And then Sarah mentioned they both played guitar…done! Guitars and hand painted pianos here we come!

Feeling Funky

I’m a sucker for having people get dressed up and then throwing them in front of all different shades of grittiness, for a creative contrast of fancy meets funky. Jessica and Tyler also sport some pretty rad tattoos, adding another level graffiti to the shoot that we did down in the Santa Fe Art district that is already blanketed in colorful creations by local artists. “Spark”s flew and there are pictures to prove it!

A Walk in Wash Park

There are the couples that know EXACTLY where they want their engagement pictures done and there are the couples who have no clue. And then their are the couples who each know EXACTLY where they want their engagement pictures done, but they each have somewhere completely different in mind. In the case of Tarynn and Mitch, he wanted traditional photos in a park and she wanted hip and slightly urban. Since she was making most of the wedding decisions, she was gracious enough to give Mitch his wish. But as girl who firmly believes that we can all have it all, I was dead set on pleasing them both. The three of us could not have asked for a more beautiful morning in Washington Park in Denver. Unfortunately the historic boat house was under renovation at the time, so we weren’t able to take advantage of that Wash Park staple, but from the lake, to the blooming trees and gardens, to the playground, the morning was a fabulous trifecta of fun. And with the Old South Pearl Street just down the road, we were able to finish the morning shoot off with a touch of old brick walls and colorful doors.
